The reincarnation of Elijah? Jesus didn't use those words. In John 1:21, John denied that he was Elijah. Gabriel's announcement was that John would come "in the spirit and power" of Elijah (Luke 1:17). It was never meant that the literal Elijah would return to this earth. The prophecy came to pass just as it was stated.
