That is a good question. I can only give what I feel is the best way for me. I read his teachings or listen to him speak and think about what he has said with a sincere heart, with real intent, having faith in god, wanting to know if what he is saying is true. I compare what he has said to what the scriputes teach and pray about it to know if it is true. I also ask other people I feel are inspired their opinions. Then I proay to know if the man is a true Prophet. This pattern can be followed to know the truth of all things. We dont have to take mans word for it. God can reveal the truth unto us. On many occasions I have felt the power of the Holy Ghost manifest the truth unto me. The scriptures teach that by the power of the Holy Ghost, Ye may know the truth of all things. If I told you, "that man is a true prophet," you wouldn't know it. If 1000 people told you he was a prophet, you wouldn't know it. If the Holy Ghost entered into your heart and bore testimony that he was a prophet. You would have a conviction that you could go to your death bearing testimony that that man is a true prophet of God. That what he teachs are the same word that God would say if he was there speaking himself. Remember to have a sincere heart, with real intent, having faith in God and he will maifest the truth unto you.
P.S. Once you gain a conviction the man is a true prophet, Then you must believe what he says as the word of God. Each time he speaks after that you shouldn't ask God if the man is a true Prophet. If you always have a sincere heart with real intent and faith in God, it is perhaps OK. However God may be thinking, the Holy Ghost has born testimony to him already that my servant is a true Prophet. Why can't he, or she have faith in that and believe that I love him, or her and live the teachings I reveal through my servants the Prophets.
Even in the days of Jesus one of his chosen 12 betrayed him because he let Satan tempt him and cause doubts that Christ was not the Son the God, The only Begotton of the Father. The Savior and Redeemer. Once you gain a testimony, by the power of the Holy Ghost, be true to it. Don't be like a Judah. Who after having received so many evidences was influenced by Satan and betrayed his Savior.
If you tell your son or daughter something that is true. How would you feel if they continued to ask you over and over again? It is the same thing with God. We are his children. He is our kind and loving parent.
And When Ye Know the Truth, The Truth Shall Set You Free!
