bob, thanks for the response. if you were to ask me, i'd say my bite is off. it 'feels' off... sometimes it feels like one side won't touch while the other side does.. other times it feels like the back rows don't touch while the front ones do.
my dentist suggested i keep wearing the night guard... unfortunately i think it is hurting more than helping. its certainly protecting against my grinding, but my mouth doesn't like the guard in there... it makes me more anxious and i bite down on the guard. i wore it all day for a few weeks and all i did was use it as Jerry Tarkanian uses his towel ;)
i've since stopped wearing it. every time i feel myself clenching, i tell my jaw to relax... that makes the whole system feel better. it hasn't helped the misaligned bite problem though. Also, taking out my mouthguard has helped my ears... at one point i could actually feel something hard protruding up under the skin of my ear that hurt alot... since i've taken out my guard, this seems to have ceased for the time being.
things seem to be 'better', but not to the point where i wouldn't go to a specialist to take care of the problem.
another thing about my bite... when i first open up, everything seems symmetrical.. but as i continue to open to the full limit, my jaw will dip to the right (the side that i'm having my most problems on in terms of my ear)
my jaw cracks, my ears rattle, my one ear in specific feels plugged. last week, i could 'alleviate' the plugged feeling my putting my pinky in my ear, and pushing up on the ear canal wall where it seemed to be most swollen. it did actually feel better, and i din't feel clogged. I didn't go back too far into my ear to do this, or else i woulnd't have done it.
i've been grinding all my life... i can remember slight problems with my jaw/hearing since childhood. when i got my nightguard, i wore it all the time. when i started waking up at night with HORRID pain, it was when i wasn't wearing my guard. I think my jaw was used to closing the 'wrong' way and rebelled against the whole system ;)
I am in morristown, NJ, but wouldn't might travelling for a good doctor. I have Aetna HMO insurance.
