In the 70's I became the friend of a British widow who was living
with her daughter In the West Indies. She was extremely nosey about
everything that occured (politically) on the island. She constantly
spoke of intrigue - spies, Communists, drug runners and revolution.
Being young and innocent I allowed myself to involved with her obsession.
Ultimately, I was interviewed by a top British intelligence officer
who took my information and went away. When he returned, he told me
that what I had divulged was a fact but "Once you get that high in the
pecking order of world society, these aristocrats are immune from
international law." Twas then that I knew that what I had learned in
my civics class back in Indiana was not necessarily accurate. I returned
to the island a couple of years ago and looked up many old friends.
When I asked about my old spy tutor, I was told she had been found
decapitated in a Sugar field. They even wrote a popular Calypso song
about her demise. I guess I'm saying that some realities you just have
to live with. I learned to.
