Don't wash it! I did that last year, and had to throw it away. I rinsed it in water, and the next day it was full of cracks, bristles hardened, and my whole bathroom smelled like cooked cabbage, lol. I don't know what you mean by funny smell, it should smell a little because the bristles are from vegetable fibers.
