What I always do when I purchase a new stone or crystal, is that I sense the energy of it. And the energy that it gives me.
If it gives me a yucky feeling, I automatically don't purchase it. Because of that feeling, I know that it isn't the right one for me.
When I do find one that gives me good vibes, I then purchase it and take it home with me. When I get it home, I normally smudge it with sage to clean any energies off of it. Then I set it in the sun to energize.

After I use it on myself or someone else, I cleanse it again. If I can't smudge it, or cleanse it with Sea Salt (only non-porous stones and crystals can handle soaking in Sea Salt ), then I run water over it visualizing the water flowing from it going from black, to grey, to white. Then I smudge it or set it in Sea Salt when I get home.

For those stones or crystals that you no longer use or feel drawn to anymore, pass them on to others if you feel guided to. I did this to a reiki student of mine, and gave him a clear quartz and a rose quartz. My rose quartz screamed his name at me. When I attuned him with him holding both crystals (I was guided to do this), he told me afterwards that the rose quartz vibrated and physically kept turning around in his hands. He now uses both stones with much success to him. :)

But I don't ever buy something that doesn't set well with me. Because then it isn't appropriate to me and will only do me harm or give me bad will instead. :)
