I saw this problem on the NYSE boards and recently at jasmuheen.com. Jasmuheen at jasmuheen.com has a public breatharian forum. When jasmuheen was on tour the forum had no administration. All of a sudden 2 bashers, one named Timus Dobsonus and another named dogbite began slandering every post, giving death threats to posters who posted on thier experiences with vegan, fruitarian, inedia diets, spirituality, etc, since jas was on tour and there was no administrator, these two negative bashers posted 100's of hate mails against jas and anyone who posted on jasmuheens forums. They later explained they were two (obviously) angry alcoholic men who lived in a flat in london. Basically internet stalkers, and were both possibly paid bashers, by some guy named randy who attacks alternative practitioners and sets them up as targets to be discredited by these paid bashers, or the men were just as they claimed, two alcoholics who wanted to bash a site. When jasmuheen returned from tour and saw the 100's of negative hate posts TWO bashers made, they were deleted and promptly banned from her forums. They were there only to attack, bash and cause trouble. They had no interest in the subject matter and only posted to bash. It was like burger king employees going into mcdonalds to attack the customers because they do not like mcdonalds, that is illegal and should be banned and is corrected by security. If people hate or feel negative they have plenty of places to vent thier hate against a subject. A forum is not one of those places. Barefoot herbalist has no negative voting on his site and many feel safe and post there because of this no negative voteing feature. If you want to be popular you must pander to current public whims and moods, if you want to be free speach for all, flame throwers and negative hecklers, bashers must be blocked by security or they will destroy a forum with fear mongering, bashing and negativity.
Now in the NYSE boards paid bashers are the norm, corporations hire people for 6-8 dollars an hour to wreck competitors message boards, a very very negative environment, intolerable really, so much constant bashing and negativity.
You mention Bush, in the recent campaign debates, no personal attacks or mud slinging was allowed, the attack on vp chenys lesbian daughter went down as a flop attack and bad snipe. Security is used to keep hecklers, bashers and negatives out of convention debates now. And rules of conduct and decency are set for debate,no personal attacks, no mud slingers, no hecklers, no stalkers, no bashers or negatives, only questions and answers dealing with the issues are addressed.
Lastly, public commedianes report they no longer wish to play small clubs because they say they are attacked by negatives and drunks in the smaller comedy club audiences. Commedianes and small clubs can not afford tons of security and bashers and hecklers and negatives know this, female commedianes say alcoholics scream, show us your breasts etc, and male comediannes say glasses and alcohol bottles are thrown at them by bashers. It is not right to let negatives disrupt.
I say get rid of the negatives, the bashers and the attackers. I say voting is for popularity contests and has no business on a forum dedicated to health and information. People can post thier own comments if they personally had a good or bad experience. If we believe people are so dumb that they can not think for themselves then we give no credit to ourselves or others. I say get rid of negative votes unless you like playing popularity games and are trying to gage, weather bell test, popularity test, markets by these votes. I think traffic is a better gage, the silent majority in usa and globally do what they want and are not playing the polling and vote trend games, popularity games. Less then 10% of the population in USA even votes in political elections! If you want to be popular, you must pander pablum for gerber baby food, or give everyone free money, if you give everyone who comes to a site handfulls of free money,that will be a most popular site. If you want truth, information, etc., you must limit negatives that interfere with truth and new or old information. I think people on curezone are intelligent enough to take what they need and leave the rest.
These are just my observations.
