I don't know what kind of nasty you picked up but there are some good free tools to aid the situation. SOme are free trials.

I like webroot spy sweeper, adaware, and spybot search and destroy.

Did it over take your browser? If so there may be some other needed steps although webroot spy sweeper seems to take care of them.
