Here a would be MD takes the usual courses that would be doctors everywhere take. When the would be doctor gets to the stage of choosing a speciality, he or she might select, for example, gynaecology or acupuncture; both would result in the same degree. So yes, to directly answer your question, formal eductation in alternatives is offerred in France.
It goes further though. My home is near a spa town, the French army has a base there, where they send injured/ill soldiers to take the waters. It's all paid for by the French Government. They would not be paying if they didn't believe in alternative treatments.
OK, there are crap doctors here, like there are everywhere, but you've got to put them aside; along with crap accountants, ministers, whatever.
The fact is that I have friends who are on ginko and other herbal remedies, prescribed by mainstream doctors, who could have just as easily prescribed a drug.
