Try not to worry about what happened to your aunt...the bloating and red eyes that you have can be caused by many things other than cancer. You are under a lot of stress now...that alone can compromise your digestive functioning, immune system and ability to concentrate. Make sure that you are getting plenty of B vitamins...essential during times of prolonged stress such as working on a PhD and dealing with a chronic illness. Even though you cannot take a vacation at this time...make sure that you take mini-breaks to replenish yourself...and get plenty of rest. You WILL get through this!
