For psychiatric stuff I'll freely admit that a lot of it seems bogus to me. There are some real neurological problems that people have but a lot of psychology is full of buzz words and "creating new disorders." To me, stuff like restless leg syndrome is kinda pushing it, but apparently it affects a good amount of people. I was talking about infectious diseases. i.e. governments created HIV.
No respectable member of the allopathic community would ever call menopause a disease. Menopause is a naturally occurring stage of life. HRT is an option to reduce symptoms. My mom did it and loved it. Alternative medicine for menopause treats the symptoms too, unless there's some root or herb that can prevent it.
Pharmaceutical companies provide a service. People have problems. They look for ways to treat them. It's not as if they're brainstorming in their conference room, saying "alright let's start with Depression then throw in some schizophrenia and maybe some sleepwalking. who's got a cool sounding name for that" (It's tempting to think this but probably not true) When you visit a doctor and tell them you have anxiety or other psychiatric ailment, the first thing they are trained to do (and hopefully do) is find out what's going on in your life. Stressors, life changes, etc. Could meditation/exercise/etc. fix those problems? Probably. People want the fast easy way though. So, they ask for a pill. Who's at fault here? The providers or the consumers? That's not rhetorical, I don't know the answer to that.
Pharmaceutical companies do lots of very bad things, especially nowadays, but there are some quality drugs out there that do real good for people with real problems. Sometimes, it's the only way to treat them. Other times, it's more of a convenience factor. Of course, if you eat poorly and don't exercise and have high cholesterol you could make life changes or get a pill. The option is up to you. But for some people, they can be in really good shape, eat right, etc. but genetics gave them a problem with cholesterol. They can't make many more positive life changes, so the pill is great for them.
