The basic question is where do we draw the line. Sitting back and doing nothing resulted in 9/11. That was a very real, non-manufactured terror threat. The whole point of terror campaigns is their non specific nature...it is not going to be possible to rid the world from terrorists...ever... While at the same time, doing nothing has not been effective. Now we are between a rock and a hard place. Do nothing, more Americans may die needlessly...and the other extreme is war. Seems we are damned if we do, damned if we don't. Where was the middle ground and when did we cross over it? I don't know. I personally thank God it was not my decision to make...and since I am not willing to be the one to make the decision, I have to be willing to support the ones who were, whether I agree with them or not. It amounts to the same position as people who don't vote but complain about elected officials.
As far as supporting Saddam in 88...hindsight is 20/20 at that time he was the lesser of two evils. I am not thrilled about war and the repercussions but neither am I thrilled about our country tearing itself apart in the name of freedom of speech. There is an appalling lack of patriotism and respect for our government in this country. We have lost the sense of unity we once had. Out of chaos comes...well...what we are facing right now.
We pride ourselves on freedom of speech and many times, what is not said counts for more than what is. So much goes on, both negative and positive that the average American never knows about. Altruism was never a question in this situation. No one starts a war without expecting some gain from it. But to my mind, the time to throw around blame is past. We are in for the ride...now we just have to hold on, muster up some dignity wherever we can find it and hope to learn something from all of this. What that might be right now, your guess is as good as mine.
