Smoking and Nicotine do not cure UC. No one should start smoking thinking it will help only to deal with many other negative consequences. This is what's known. There is a greater percentage of Crohn's patients who smoke than in the average population. However that is not true for UC patients. And there is evidence that ceasing to smoke has precipitated UC in some patients. But the reason for that is most likely due to increased stress and tension brought on by the nicotine withdrawal. Those who rely on smoking to relax should see some benefits, so you have a tough choice to make about deciding to quit. If you don't smoke now, there is little to gain by starting. Nicotine is also a powerful stimulate, this heightens the sensitivity of the nerves in the bowel, increasing your pain and discomfort. Any stimulant will also cause more intestinal activity and more frequent bowel movements, both very undesirable in UC patients. Nicotine also constricts the blood supply, and as a result it could mean less bleeding. Take away the nicotine, your circulation will return to normal, and it could mean more bleeding. So it could bring some relief in that regard. However poor circulation also means less oxygen to the cells and less healing ability, all of which contribute to unhealthy intestines. So there are your choices. Choose well.
