I read umpteen books on electricity and electronics while trying to figure this out and some said the same as you did and some said the opposite. So, I tried it both ways and got great results from putting the positive wire on the inside. I think the point is that it works, whether it makes sense or not.

I'm surprised you got nightmares from magnetized water - I got no effects at all for several weeks and that was just weakness.
