in the event of a war. Everything becomes a nationalized federal agency...
You don't think that CNN would be allowed to broadcast their views openly if the war was on the North American
continent. (Baghdad Bob dosen't need any help.)

GM would have to stop making Cadillacs and concentrate on Hummers... (Ooops! not that kind!)

The telephone system would become a secure communication medium and even employees would be
highly suspect of being spies for the other side.

With the varied nationalities of the present population, it would be prudent to be wary of the loyalties
of the masses and not risk a revolt. The jails could become full of the "Nationality of Dissent" in short order,
much like in WW2 when the Japanese were rounded up regardless of their citizenship.

That isn't a conspiracy. It is all common sense when the country is at stake.
