Hi Jane-
I'll try to give you some info about the VNS. I've had epilepsy now for 10 years and my seizures used to be really bad.. about 5-10 a day. My neuro and I decided that it was best to get the VNS, since my seizures were getting worse and worse and the meds that I was taking weren't helping out to the extent that I wanted them to help out.
The surgery only took about an hour and a half. My pulse activator was turned on two weeks after my surgery. The VNS helped me control my seizures and made them very minimal for me which was great. I didn't really experience any side effects with the VNS except difficulty in breathing here and there--but that was because I had to lower my settings on the device. I would definitely recommend it. It has really helped me out a lot. Let me know if i can give you any more information. Good Luck!
