Dear Tracey,

I read with interest your message concerning the connection between milk protein allergy and seizures. My five year-old grandson has been diagnosed with left frontal lobe epilepsy (seizures began occurring when he was 2 1/2 years old). Initially seizures were controlled with Tegretol, but close to his fourth birthday, he began having seizures once again. His condition has continued to worsen and despite trials with a variety of medications, control has not been achieved. He is now on Tegretol, Depakote, and Keppra. He continues to have break-through seizures, ranging from minor staring episodes to grand-mal seizures. Diastat is used to control seizures that continue beyond five minutes.

There is a profound history of milk-protein allergy in our extended family, ranging from gastro-intestinal distress to rash, to "milk-insomnia" which my daughter (this grandson's mother)had as a child. She also had febrile seizures that she outgrew at age five. We were able to control her insomnia by keeping her on a dairy-free diet. As she grew, she appeared to tolerate cheese and yogurt, but was not able to eat these foods while breast-feeding her own children. Each of her three children(our grandson with epilepsy is the second)has been intolerant of milk products as an infant.

I would appreciate any insight that you could give me concerning the relationship between seizures and milk-protein allergy. Has your daughter remained seizure free on the dairy-free protocol?
