I've had 7 all natural deliveries, 5 of them home births. Of course you probably know that midwives approach pregnancy very differently than OBs. What my midwives did was to watch my glucose (sugar) and protein levels in my urine. At any pharmacy you can get urine sticks that measure these things and often much more. My midwives didn't worry if I had a trace of protein or Sugar in my urine. But if I got to +1 they wanted to know what I was eating.

I only had one baby in the hospital (after having 5 home births). There they watch you like a hawk and make you undergo all kinds of tests which might be indicated for an indigenous population, but not for most healthy mothers. Because age was a risk factor (cough, cough- I was 38 LOL) I had to do the whole fasting blood level test for gestational diabetes. I was borderline, so they wanted me to do more tests which involved fasting for a longer period of time. My CNM fussed at the staff and I didn't have to do it. She convinced them that denying my body any nourishment for that long of a time would place more of a compromise on the fetus than any benefit from the test- also referring to my "age."

All this to say, my midwife said that once you start on the insulin train with gestational diabetes, your pancreas gets used to it, dependent on it, and you write yourself a prescription for regular diabetes soon after the pregnancy. I have a dear friend who did exactly this and now is a diabetic.

I'd say since you're borderline, do exactly as your intuition is telling you. You're a healthy mom, don't worry about the extra weight right now, watch your own Sugar levels with urine sticks, and hold back on the sweet stuff if you go over a trace.

Just my 2 cents from a mom, not a pro.
