Hi Carla
I understand your dilemna, I have quite strong views and they may be of some help to you. I chose not to have an ultrasound when I was pregnant as I dont think there is enough long term studies done on the effects on yr baby ... I hear people saying their baby was really moving around in utero during the ultrasound, how cute!? ... I say the baby is trying to escape the sound waves. There are possibly cases where ultrasound may be useful, but definately not done routinely. Amniocentesis is done and gives you a choice of an abortion if the baby has a congenital handicap, if you would not agree to an abortion, there is really no need to have the test in the first place. I had a homebirth with my 3rd and it was the best birth for me, I was able to have the people I wanted and loved around me and was in an environment I prepared and was comfortable in. Maybe you could research your area to see if you have supportive Independent/Homebirth midwives that could give you more information on your choices about having your baby at home, at a birthing centre or maybe an independent midwife supporting you if you went to hospital. If you have ever read Janet Balaskas books (she wrote Active Birth and lots more), she was 43 and decided to have a home birth due to pressure from her Doctor [mainly because of her age].
You sound like you are very in touch with your intuition, dont let that be taken away from you due to their fears .. I feel us women have an innate wisdom that we can tap into esp during pregnancy.
Hope this has helped you .... much love to you and your baby.
