One of the reasons they usually want you to have had a baby already before chosing the IUD method, is because there is an increased risk of infertility (due to PID or other infections, not just from STDs, as the IUD might cause enough irritation to create scar tissue and prevent you, or make it more difficult, to get pregnant in the future). They figure if you have one child already, it's not so horrible if you can't become pregnant again, and it shows that your fertility isn't 'border-line' already.

I would choose the copper IUD myself, if I was to choose that method, as I have TERRIBLE problems with any hormonal type birth control methods. They really don't know why the IUD works. The hormonal ones obviously are like a really low dose 'birth control pill', however the copper ones are more of a 'mystery'. I have read, if you drive a copper stake into the root system of a tree, it'll kill the tree (I assume from copper poisioning as water erodes the rod and the tree absorbs the copper). Perhaps the copper somehow 'kills' the sperm on contact and affects your PH balance. I do know that you need copper in some amounts in your body, and it has many benefits (helps keep hair from pre-mature graying, helps with achy joints, etc)....but just how much you are absorbing from a small IUD is something I have no idea about.

Hope this doesn't make you wonder more about using it or not, just some things to think about and hopefully your Health care specialist can discuss the pros and cons a bit more in detail with you.
