I had the "fainty feeling" that occurs after a BM. It was horrible for awhile, actually dragging myself out of the bathroom on hands and knees after BMs.
Later, it became painfull bloating, constipation, and a wretched anxiety that was worse when I ate the wrong things. I am sure the anxiety was AFTER things got worse, not the other way around. Doctors are unanimous in disagreeing with that, claiming the anxiety is the cause of it. I disagree, and I am the start witness... i was diagnosed with IBS in 1992. I am addicted to morphine now, it helps the gut but ruins the life, don't do it unless you are ready to die.
But back to the problem - what are the factors, what to eat?
Sugar is the absolute worst. Processed foods are all going to make it worse. I am having a great day today after avoiding HYDROGINATED OILS and SUGAR, both of which I crave, in certain "food products". An addiction of sorts.
I took DANDELION ROOT too, it helps. Other LIVER HERBS help too - look them up here is a link - http://www.viable-herbal.com/homepage.htm {if not live, copy and paste into browser window].
Elimination is key - adults have increasingly narrow and small stoools in their BMS. Stimulate, Lubricate and plenty of water.
WATER is the easiet thing, but we don't do it.I have trouble with it too. We have some ideaa about it making o ur bowels uncomfortable, right? Its not true in the long term, and barely trtue at all. Peeing is good, dont restrict water to avoid peeing, even at night, you will be better off getting up that being dry. And you are in for a surprise- after three days of enough water, drinking lots doesn't make you pee more, I am sure of this.
The amount really is 60 to 80 oz.for avg. adults, esp at first, for three days at least to get re-hydrated sufficiently - it is a process!!Please try it once in your lifetime, please.
Foods I find least troublesome are "whole foods" - apples, dates, berries, nuts and seeds are essential, and eggs, even small amounts of meat[i eat some bacon with the eggs, everyday] but no grains or dairy. Some milk on cereal might be ok, not for most adults - 50% of us do not tolerate LACTOSE. The "box-cereal-and-milk" meals we love are the worst thing to plague North American bowels.
That is too much help , I am sure. It is hard to make changes. I hope something here helps you, I feel for you, it is not a nice thing to have IBS, it is horrid. All my doc says is: "well, you've had it for 15 years and it didn't kill you", as if that helps at all. Asses, the lot of 'em.

quoted from 2nd reply:
"Supposedly it's mostly a mental thing. Are you prone to anxiety or depression? These factors can have a huge impact on digestion. I know that's the case with me, anyway".
True enough, there is no doubt our emotions play a role with bowel.
Bowel is so intimate with emotions because it is the Enteric Nervous system where the acytylcholine [sp?] neuro-transmitter is "made".
I must suggest that a diseased bowel will play havoc with your emotions too. {See that? i confused the whole thing there, but it works both ways of course.}
