iman, i was just talking to a friend of mine about this as well.
She used to wear t-shirts with sayings like "These Colors Dont Bleed",
(red white & blue), extreme patriotic duty kill the terrorist mindset.
I did also have a pride regarding tribes not of my own knowledge!
But when I found out, it had nothing to do with negativity, nor spreading of a sword, but the underlying essence of a natural state, then it just seemed natural to say shahada.
I was scared though, I had to fight with family, lost a few friends.
They were soon replaced in my life, and i have a circle of embracing friends whenever I need them they are there and vice versa. It is natural.
For example:
It is natural to go out with a friend and have her NOT check out your husband.
It is natural for my husband NOT check out my friend.
Most people dont think this is natural. But to safeguard a marriage it is. Then that in turn safeguards the society in which you live. It really is respectful. And for the women it is a secure unconditional love. Marriage is supposed to be sacred, and this is not always the case.
But to people of understanding, marriage is a sacred vow and not taken lightly.
This is something which is more precious than hoards of gold and silver multiplied.
Salaams!
Love,
M
