I would say that retention, while important, may not be the goal here. The saltwater should have a chipping effect on the mass. If the face down method isn't working, there are a couple of techniques you can try, that I have tried on myself.
1) Elevate her hips. Place a couple of rolled up towels under her hips and keep her head flat on the floor. Get her hips as high as possible, but be sure to place another towel behind the big roll so that there isn't a dip in her abdomen that may cause pressure or prevent fluid from flowing up her colon.
2) Use a trickle dose. Instead of trying to get it all in her, trickle the fluid in a little at a time. It may need time to get around the mass. Contact with the mass is most important. So just put a little in at a time. The closer to the rectum the mass is, the less will be allowed, and the longer it will take. Just go slow.
3) I know she is four, so have her focus on counting how long she can hold it in. Distract her from the pressure by telling her to see if she can count to 20 before she goes. Also, try having her snap her fingers between counts to help her hold longer. It may help her to control her urge more.
4) Tell her what you and she will be doing before you start so she will know what her signal will be to start counting. If she doesn't have to run to the toilet by the time she finishes counting, ask her to do her abc's while you wait.
I hope it helps, truly, good luck.
