let me assure you that we live in a physical body and I do not believe that there are problems associated with pain that are purely non physical rooted.
I am convinced that body, mind and spirit are connected and are influencing each other however there can be no physical pain without physical (underlying root causes).
I checked and treated thousands of people and NONE was free of misalignments in the spine and ALL had misalignments in their sacrum although the pain was found in many different areas and often not at the area where I found a misalignment.
That leaves for me only one conclusion: It starts at the sacrum as the foundation of the spine and every therapy must include the re-alignment of the sacrum as well in order to achieve balance again.
In your case: beside possible contributing factors on the nonphysical side (e.g. stress in whatever form) you developed a problem in the neck due to a misalignment in the sacrum that brought the spine out of balance and paved the way for other problems e.g. misalignments, postural imbalances etc. ending up with detectable problems in the neck as a result of long term adjustments the body had to make in order to counter act the sacrum problem.
The good news: since i was able to prove this statement by helping basically all of my patients (at least the ones that followed my advices and did all necessary life style changes and exercises)I can assure you that we do not live in a ´status quo´or in other words ´standind still´, we constantly are in a state of development and therefore your condition is surely developing as well and with the correct approach you might be able to reverse the situation.
One thing is for sure: you have to do the majority of this work no-one else can do this for you. (althought you may need some initial help from a pro when it comes to basic re-alignments in the structural system)

Did you check out the exercises I recommend in my website?

Looking forward to hear good new from you soon.

Blessings
Thomas
