Hi hcat,
I am a school nurse who has been trying to promote better nutrition for students for two years now. I have passed out several copies of Barbara Reed Stitt's book called Food and Behavior to school principals and others. She and her husband are the owners of Natural Ovens and Bakery. She was a parole or probation officer when she started having problems with her own health. She discovered a better way of eating and was able to help a lot of her probationers with behavior changes/food changes. It is a remarkable story. I purchased my many copies from Hallelujah Acres (hacres.com), but you can probably find it on ebay or amazon.
I love the book and have shared it with many of my nursing colleagues. It has been met with much skepticism, and that is why I was so excited to see it put into practice with the Appleton High School.
I received a video from the folks at Central Alternative High School in Appleton, WI free of charge back in January '03. I do not know if they still have them available. I phoned the principal, Luann Coenen, when I first saw the info, and she told me that she was receiving phone calls from as far away as Rome, Italy.
ABC Good Morning America Show also did a segment on the school in January, but they want upwards of $100.00 or more for a video reproduction.
I have tried to sell this program, but my high school principal told me that the vending machines support the athletic programs. She calls herself a Christian, and I believe she is one. I pray that the Holy Spirit will convict her to cease from sacrificing the health and future of most of the students at our high school. We have a very bad reputation. Some people say we are the most violent school in the city and some say even in the state.
Hope this helps.
