I have had the same experience a few times and each time I analyzed these occurences it appeared to have been an attempt by some entity (person or force) I felt I needed protection from to get access to me in the dream state. My own higher consciousness appeared to be protecting me and alerting me by the knocking. Each time I felt to pray (in my case - Our Father Hail Mary) - and this eliminated the intrusion.
