In his book "Fantastic Flax" (Alive Books, Vancouver, Canada, 2002), Siegfrid Gursche writes that in the 70s and 80s, he met a farmer in Manitoba that informed him about a cooperative agreement between farmers from Morden, Manitoba and Agriculture Canada, on the development of a strain of yellow flax that yielded a lot of oil but very few omega-3.

"The aim of this project", says Gursche, "was to create a strain of flax which would not turn rancid thereby extending its shelf-life and making it suitable as a cooking oil".

In May 1993, Health and Welfare Canada "gave its approval to market the "refined Linola" oil in Canada" an oil produced from genetically engeneered seed.

"While the self-life of this product is extended, it will not extend the span of human life" concludes Gursche.
