Hi,
My first recommendation would be to ask your hairdresser if he/she can look to make sure lice is the culprit. Most of them are quite adept at identifying them.
I didn't visit the links which were posted, but several years ago my daughters had a yr-long run-in with lice! It was my worst nightmare, but now I can at least talk about it without my head starting to itch. ;^) Anyway, my advice is to STAY AWAY FROM DRUG-STORE CHEMICAL REMEDIES. They do NOT work (lice have become immune to things like RID) and are extremely dangerous! You also don't need a lice comb. All you need is some home-made salad dressing: oil and vinegar in equal amounts in a spray bottle. Spray your head, then wear a shower cap overnight. Wash in the morning. Both live ones and nits will be dead and the oil makes the eggs simply flake off of your hair. I have no idea what to do when they have spread to the skin, but the remedies I saw posted for this sounded good.
Do this as often as necessary with a few other precautions:
1. Vacuum everyday - anything that is material, including your car seats. Immediately empty your vacuum bag everytime (I know it's expensive, but you'll be sorry if you don't!)
2. Put hair brushes and combs in boiling water for a few minutes. And I would do the same with any make-up brushes you've been using.
3. A hot dryer works on clothes that are clean, but may be infested.
4. We had to cover our mattresses, boxsprings, and pillow cases in plastic for at least 3 weeks (found that the heavy-duty black plastic bags worked wonders). Also, if you have kids, their plush toys will need the same treatment.
5. NEVER, ever wear anyone else's clothes or hats, and never use someone else's hair brush. (My kids were homeschooled when we contracted lice from a neighbor who rode with us one night to church - she continued to reinfect us over several months until I wised up.)
After getting lice afresh from the neighbor 7 times, I assure you this method will work (and believe me, I tried everything!). Of course, the best thing is to find out where it came from in the first place, and make sure to cut off the source in the future.
Hope this has helped and wasn't too long or repetitive! I know firsthand what a nightmare lice can be!!
