Marc,
Food lectins, particularly from wheat and soy, are suspected of stripping away the mucus lining from not only the upper respiratory tract, but also from the intestinal wall. When this happens, gut permeabillity is changed (leaky gut syndrome). Such a condition can set up a person for a number of autoimmune problems: Rheumatoid Arthritis , lupus, celiac disease, diabetes, as well as ulcers. If mucus is already compromised--say, through cleansing--lectins may have an easier time doing their dirty work. Besides protective mucus, we appear to have a fine screen of sialic molelcules which help protect against these lectins. It is suggested that viruses, aspirin, or other inflammatory medications may also weaken our resistance to lectins. Is is in realm of possibility that the substances used in colon cleansing may affect the screen of sialic molecules as well? I do not know.
About the penny--it is difficult to comment on an anecdote for which you have to trust that someone is telling the truth, but I concede that just about anything is possible.
What are your thoughts about how doctors doing colonoscopies on older, unhealthy people never find mucoid plaque--just clean, pink flesh?
Michael
