Philpott is wrong. The side of a compass that is marked South will be attracted to the North pole of your magnet. Think of the direction a compass is facing when you're traveling North. The side of the compass marked North faces the South pole of the earth and the side marked South faces the North pole of the earth. The magnetic field in the Northern hemisphere is the magnetic North (negative) pole of the earth. Trust me on this, I know what I'm talking about.
