The Power Of Intent
Ego-driven intent is truly the prime source for modern ills of all
kinds. Through it, nations do battle for the sake of self interest
alone. So too do neighbors and families find discord of all kinds,
dissatisfaction and inner strife, through intent that is not based on more progressive ends. In the modern world, we find that humanity has traded the reality of natural laws and the natural world, for images which serve only vanity, and aligning with the status quo.
If we are to achieve peace and real satisfaction from life as
individuals ... and as a species ... then it is our deepest need to remain aware of what intentions we are using moment to moment ... and this can only be achieved through daily "watchfulness" of our thoughts and belief systems that form our perceptions. Only this way will we change the existing “consumer intentions” which are in place
now. Yet, this is only a first step. The next step is to actually
improve our intent in the direction of universal causes ... such as spiritual self realization ... rather than the selfish concerns of consumerism and materialism.
Intent relates to motive … in fact, it is the very source of motive. When we speak of finding love, gaining clarity or realizing world peace, we must first seriously ask what motivates humanity at present to lack love, clarity and peace. We lack these things because we lack the right intent, or motive, to embrace such qualities in our daily lives. Wrong intent may be defined as selfish motives which seek only the benefit of self, at the cost of all else. Right intent is defined as that which works for the cause of universal human benefit, in love, clarity and wise understanding, as well as the further evolution of this living planet of ours.
Through an internal study of intent, we learn more about ourselves, than with any psychological analysis or philosophical focus. Intent is the very basis of our centers of consciousness, so when we are not focused upon our intent, we truly are not “centered in ourselves“.
Our motives then become obscured to the conscious mind, yet intent
continues on every moment in us, regardless of whether it is
acknowledged. In meditation, it is not difficult to first focus on
the feelings in the body or observe thoughts in the mind. Through
these, we can see what our intent is doing ... just like wind can be observed when it moves grass and leaves. Later in our practice of self realization, we need only look within at any time to directly see our intent in action. Likewise, we come to see others in terms of their intent, rather than just what is socially projected, giving deep insights into our relationships. The more we become aware of intent from which all thoughts and feelings constantly arise, the more we can then really change for the sake of very significant self improvement. .
For most, intent is not something that is kept foremost in mind on a daily basis. This is a result of modern cultural influences. They have trained us to stay in our thoughts, rather than becoming the true maker of our thoughts. Running our lives through our created thought patterns, rather than through the creator of thought ... intent and awareness ... could be likened to driving a car from the back seat.
Consciousness is an alive and active force within all of nature. But we have forgotten this by focusing elsewhere. Through social training in a materialistic society, humanity’s focus has been centered on two major things … how we look and what we’re doing in the physical world. Both of these focuses relate to creating the kind of life mandated by social expectations, but do not and cannot reflect how we really are as spiritual beings. The fact is, we have a real SELF that exists independently of what we do, and which cannot be defined by daily activities. Nor can it be defined by our thoughts, which are also something we do. It can only be defined in terms of our intent ... the source of motives, awareness ... that which focuses, as distinguished from that which is focused upon, and energy ... our vitality level, chi. These three form the true Self, or Soul, also known as CONSCIOUNESS.
Our difficulty as a culture is that we’ve been confused by the images and thoughts of our own making. The social “norms” seen on television and in advertising of all kinds are a perfect example. We imagine that this is how things inherently are, rather than realizing this is only one way to make them. Life does not have to be led as we’ve been taught to believe. We can create an entirely new course for ourselves and this society by changing our intent in life. To do this, however, it is best to focus upon intent itself, and to a lesser extent, awareness itself, rather than just thoughts. This is a primary purpose for meditation ... to see the shifts of the intent within ... to realize that behind every decision and action we take, intent is fully responsible. See that every single thought and feeling within springs from an intent. To see ourselves as awareness and intent, rather than memorized thoughts, social roles or those thoughts provided by the mass media, is to gain great Self realization. From Self realization comes greater mastery ... and even Mastery itself.
How does karma play in this? Karma is really just inertia set in
motion, and compounded over time through our daily focus. As you are probably aware by now, karma is the natural law of cause and effect.
It is our intent that is the daily cause we set up in life, whose
effect is then reflected back to us on a compounding basis. In other words, this compounding or cumulative effect from the intentions we use in life, creates inertia. Once set in motion, the natural law of inertia will tend to maintain our lives according to how we’ve lived in the past.
Addictions are a perfect example of inertia. When addictions of any kind are established, they are hard to break, and even more so, if the thing addicted to has been a long term dependency. The longer the dependency, the greater the inertia ... and the harder it tends to be to break. But knowledge of intent can offset any inertia, or karma, in our lives.
Once we realize to deeper and deeper levels, that intent is the true foundation of our quality of life and every decision made, then we can change our intent for the sake of great self evolution. The same can be done on a planetary scale, when enough people uplift the social intentions being used. For you see, society is actually just a consensus of intent ... the world functions as it does largely because this is how we have intended it to be. By the same token, we can raise our intentions to a spiritual focus in life, and create an entirely different consensus. This is in fact what we MUST do.
Then too, people go about blindly through the prescribed motions of daily living according to what is expected. This again is a lack of focus upon their awareness and intent ... one that literally cures blindness of all kinds. Our blindness is largely due to the fact that society itself has much collective inertia ... karma ... in destructive directions, due to our misuse of collective intent. That is why it is important for each of us to dis-associate entirely with the beliefs and values of society, because there is no good reason for us to take on its destructive karma.
We must question everything about the idea of “success” in this
modern world, and discard what is not useful. True success is not
based upon financial status for instance, it is based upon our level of Self realization as centers of consciousness. It is also based upon the quality of intent that we use, especially in the case of leading a spiritual, rather than a materialistic life focus. Honesty, is critical in such transformation. Honesty is merely the willingness to accept the truth about ourselves and the world. It literally makes progressive change possible.
With progressive intent, there is very little that humanity cannot
accomplish. Through it, we will find world peace and personal
fulfillment alike. On this common root will grow all good and useful things, so let us each cultivate a rapport with intent every moment, to truly grow and flourish.
This is the key to self and planetary evolution.
