I have had a history of severe iron deficiency anemia for the past three years now. Dr's have tried prescription iron (max)three times a day with no success, (my hematocrit and ferantin actually continued to drop). I have had four blood transfusions (which helped boost me temporarily). I have had an upper endoscopy, upper GI and colonoscopy. All have ruled out celiac, lesions, tumors, polyps, etc. I have had numerous blood tests for different types of anemia, all negative. The only treatment so far that has any positive results is INFED IV's on almost a quarterly basis. My levels improve to almost normal (borderline anemic at best), then gradually drop off again. The one thing the upper GI did pick up was that I have a paraesophageal hiatal hernia. It is so bad that the first upper endoscopy they did they had to quit because they could not navigate into my stomach. After seeing the "roadmap" from the upper GI results, they were able to get through using a smaller tube and lots of turns. I have been told that half of my stomach is through the diapram and not only is it flopped over at the top but also has a twist in it. On the monitor, to me it resembled an "S". My hematologist recommended against the surgery to correct this problem since it's a "difficult" surgery. The gastroenterologist did recommend me speaking with a surgeon. My question is this: could this paraesophageal hiatal hernia actually be causing the iron deficiency anemia?
For the past month or so I have been noticing more frequently that I cannot eat as much as I normally do and I have a sensation of the food not "going down" right. I'm clueless on what avenue to pursue next, as my hematocrit as of 2 months ago was 30 and dropping, and I'm getting weaker. Thanks.
