I am an RN diagnosed with thoracic and lumbar facet joint injury. This pain had been on and off since 1998 and worsened last November 2001. I have been unable to work since then due to extreme pain and discomfort which starts even with normal, light, activities. I gained so much weight and i think it aggravates the pain even more. I have undergone facet block shots, neurotomy, trigger point injections and botox shots-NOTHING helped.
I researched a lot, unaccepting that i should live with the pain and that the result of this injury is permanent. I came across "prolotherapy". I made my research about it and did my homework in regards finding the right MD for it. I ended up with Dr. Van Pelt in San Francisco. He is one of the kindest doctor i have met which is rare to find, to think i am already within the medical arena!
I had the procedure, "Prolotherapy", 1st session done almost 2 weeks ago on a Monday. He started with a prayer with me. READ ALONG, NOT TO DRAW ANY CONCLUSION BEFORE READING EVERYTHING. The procedure was tremendously painful!!! No article warned me about this! This procedure requires sedation in my opinion, specially if it's done on a sensitive area like the back and on the spine. I was in tearful pain and was terribly stiff for that day til the next. Wednesday came and my back is still sore due to the shots. BUT, the pain that seemed forever there from my old injury was NOT there! I was so happy and optimistic about the result! The pain came back but i am aware that healing takes place at leat 4-6 weeks physiologically. So i am giving this procedure a chance. Although the MD stated that ff up is at least once a month, it can be done every week like in athletes who are in a hurry. I decided to have my 2nd session next week (with conscious sedation and a rental wheelchair...can one rent wheelchairs???). I plan to have this in conjunction with accupuncture, with both electric stimulation and maxa (did i spell that correctly?) and not one of the either only since both had a positive short term result in my experience. One of my researches stated that in conjucntion with this, healing will progress faster. I am doing my own physical therapy/rehab also which consists of stretching exercises and light strengthening exercises. I am planning to do "light and no pressure" bikram yoga also w/c helped me feel stonger and looser the following day (of course with some muscle soreness from working out) in my experience.
I shall update my progress here. For those currently having theirs done, i suggest that you update your progress also.
