Once upon a time there was a town called Quacksbridge. They had a small hospital and several local GPs. The people of Quacksbridge were all pretty healthy but some of them just didn't feel as good as they thought they should. One lady kept going to see Dr Sensible about her tiredness. He felt she needed to change her job but she insisted there was something physically wrong with her.

Then a travelling empiric came to town. He diagnosed her with Vitamin Q deficiency. "But I've never heard of Vitamin Q deficiency?"

"Well it causes all sorts of symptoms - tiredness, headaches, stomach pains, poor concentration, poor sleep" - the list went on and on. Mrs Quackfriendly went to confront her doctor. "Why didn't you diagnose Vitamin Q deficiency?"

"There's no such vitamin"

"That's what the drug companies tell you is it? All those gifts they buy you off with."

Dr Sensible was quite offended by this as he was a member of nofreelunch. His Primary Care Trust actively encourage him to reduce prescribing rather than overprescribe. He pointed out to Mrs Quackfriendly that she suffered from fibromyalgia and irritable bowel syndrome and suggested low dose amitriptyline."You're saying I'm depressed - well I'm not" Dr Sensible tried to explain that low dose amitriptyline helped restore REM sleep but Mrs Quackfriendly insisted she would not have the pills.

Mrs Quackfriendly took the Vitamin Q for several weeks but didn't feel as good as she had hoped. She went back to the empiric Dr Feelgood. "Oh the problem is you need a Liver Flush - that's why the Vitamin Q didn't work"

Mrs Quackfriendly went and did a Liver Flush and felt dreadful. Dr Feelgood explained that this was due to all the poisons coming out. "But I thought it was meant to make me feel better?" "It will do, just keep with it"

Mrs Quackfriendly started getting right upper quadrant pain with the next liver flush. Dr Feelgood said "What you need is another liver flush"

Then Mrs Quackfrienly became jaundiced. Her friends rushed her up to hospital. A gallstone had become stuck in the common bile duct. The doctor said an endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatogram was needed. Mrs Quackfriendly spoke to Dr Feelgood who insisted that was not necessary so she put it off.

Mrs Quackfriendly started having rigors and her blood pressure. She was started on Antibiotics as she had become delirious and her family insisted. She went into septic shock and died.
