Hello there -
I have suffered from the most awful cystic Acne since I turned 14 years of age and I'm now 41! All I can tell you is what FINALLY worked for me.
ACCUTANE!! It's the miracle drug of the 20th century! Having tried every minocycline, tetracycline, sulfa drug, septra, topical preparations and creams combined, diet modifications, cleansings, etc., they all eventually failed me. And every month, I would get at least 4 or 5 of the nastiest lesions so deep in my facial flesh that they never really surfaced, but would drain into my lymph glands and hurt and ache and get very hard like marbles deep in the flesh. It was truly agonizing.
When I was in my late 20's, Accutane came onto the market and I was given a 4-month course by my Dermatologist. He told me that there would be some lasting side-effects (he was right) but that the Acne would be clearer longterm. He was right! The first few weeks the Acne got WORSE because all the remaining pustules and deep cysts formed earlier than they would've normally and all came to the surface. I actually had one that came up deep in the flesh of my lower lip/cheek area and I had to have that one injected with cortisone to shrink it and to cure it, the pain was so bad. But after about a month, my skin began to clear. I did notice that daily (and I mean daily!) I got an entire new set of lips! The skin on my lips peeled incessantly and this was the worst part of the treatment. I believe this was because the dosage he put me on was higher than I really needed at the time, because my second round of this drug was milder and all I got was dry lips and not the peeling and chapping daily.
I needed 2 courses of this drug to get my skin clear. The first one was when I was about 28 and the second one was about 4 years later. After the first course my skin was perfect for 3 entire years before I had to have the second round of treatment. Longterm side-effects are my dry hands and feet. Accutane has the effect of shutting down your oil glands in your extremeties, so your hands and feet will not be 'clammy' or 'greasy' anymore. I have dry skin on both areas and will need to moisturize them for the remainder of my life. But what a small price to pay to avoid those awful lesions!!!
Today, I keep my skin clear with a wonderful skincare system called 'Proactive'. You can buy it online or through infomercials. I like the way it makes my skin look. I also take Septra D/S as a maintenance drug. The combination of these 2 things keeps me clear and blemish-free. Even in the worst stress I don't get lesions anymore, have only had 2 in the last 5 years and I got those injected with the cortisone at the Dermatologist's office so they went away immediately.
Try Accutane if you want a PERMANENT cure. It truly is the best option out there for cystic acne sufferers, I have personal experience to back me up!
Good luck!
