Toxic megacolon is not associated with impacted faeces, in fact excessively loose motions are often a symptom. Toxic megacolon is the result of severe inflammation of the entire colon and the weakening and ballooning out of its wall. The dilated colon is then at risk of rupturing. It should not be confused with non-toxic megacolon, usually referred to as, simply, megacolon.
