Trapper,

I'm one of those people who believe in the doctrine of election, where God chose/elected me to be His child rather than me taking the initiative and choosing God. That puts God in the driver's seat, if you will, rather than me.

As a chosen daughter of God, and with Jesus Christ as my Savior, I have a compelling desire in my heart of hearts to serve my Lord to the best of my ability, in response to the life He has called me to here on Earth. I try to obey my Lord in everything, but of course, I fall way short. Still, the Lord calls me into a deeper walk with Him, and He gives me the grace, step by step, to overcome sin and worldliness.

Times of solitude are soooo important. It is difficult to hear the still, small voice of God with the phone ringing, the bustle of getting dinner on the table on time, or the TV hawking the latest model trucks and the best tasting lite beer. When I am alone with God I can share the most intimate secrets with Him, and He can comfort and love me in His perfect way.

But I am not called to stay alone, and neither were men of the Bible. Moses spent time with the Lord on Mt. Sinai, but came down to minister to the people. The same was true for David, Joseph of Egypt, John the Baptist, Paul, and of course, the Lord Himself. I think it's important for believers to assemble together on a regular basis to encourage and admonish each other toward righteousness and to help advance the kingdom of God.

We are also called- at least it looks like it to me- to die to ourselves, deny ourselves, pick up the cross, and follow Jesus Christ. I don't hear the "death to self" message very often in any church. I hear "bless me," "empower me," "heal me," "give me an exciting experience," and "gimme the bling bling," but not "unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground" or "sell everything you have." Those most like Christ seem to get martyred- a very different message than what is being touted by TV preachers.

Didn't mean to go off on this, but some of what you wrote struck a chord with me.

Blessings,
-Donna
