Sharon,

I think you and Trapper both have very good points. On your side, there are some great teacher/preachers from the past who may help us turn our hearts closer to Christ and help us examine our ways to see if there be any wicked ways in us. For instance, right now I am enjoying some of Spurgeon's writings, and in the past have benefitted from the works of Calvin, Tozer, and others. There are also some really good commentaries out there that may help us with our studies. Matthew Henry comes to mind.

However, these works are only the thoughts of men, and as such, cannot compare with the holiness of the Word of God itself. I recently bought a text only Bible so that I could listen to the Holy Spirit speak directly to my spirit, without the clutter of man's opinions.

In the past, I would depend too much on the thoughts of men I thought were more studied than I. These teachers could be men of old, leaders of international Christian ministries (newsletters, email subscriptions, etc), or pastors. More recently, I have been listening to these men respectfully and have considered their thoughts or positions on Biblical texts, but I have been seeking the Lord to discern truth in these texts myself. I no longer adhere to a certain doctrine simply because I am a member of a certain denomination or belong to a ministry organization or am of a particular political persuasion.

As an overgrown spiritual baby, I was allowing anyone to feed me, rather than cook and eat the meat myself. As a result, sometimes I got "food poisoning," or wasn't fed at all, or was fed only sweets.

You are absolutely right, Sharon, to admonish us to use discretion in choosing our spiritual teachers. We must be as the Bereans of old were- checking out every word that comes out of the pulpit (or Christian bookstore) against the Word of God.

Blessings, prayers, & hugs,
-Donna
