The original tithe was for a jewish feast. To be consistent with that you'd have to have all christians go to jerusalem every year and buy food with their tithe money, then eat it.

Also the tithe was of increase, not income. This term makes more sense to a farmer or business owner, you have a certain amount of assets in a given year. When the assets are greater than last year, that extra amount is the increase.

The robbery was when people would hold back, or the king would confiscate some portion of this increase, rather than to let the people (including the poor and strangers) feast on it.

Pastors who preach tithing as a law are either dishonest or do not know what they are talking about. Giving however is a good idea, and 10% of one's income is a fairly decent minimum. (Truly generous people will find themselves giving more than that, as a rule.) It should not all necessarily go to a church where you are recieving benefit, most of it should go to help the less fortunate.
