Here is a short little article on the history of Infrared, being used for more than 25 years it is not in it's infancy. Many tests and studies have been done overseas, many of them published in the Townsend Medical Journal. I could not find where this is published online, but it is available in print. I have also invited Lisa from Sunlight Saunas to post a few of the multiple studies while I was visiting with her today (my light bulb went out in my FIR (Far-Infrared-Sauna) sauna and needed a new one).
On Sunlightsaunas.com at Books and Links or this url http://www.sunlightsaunas.com/links.htm they have Sherry Roger's MD book Detox or Die, and other's that recommend infrared saunas.
Sherry Rogers book Pain Free is also a good book that refrences the benefits of infrared, and as an MD backs up her statements with studies. For those that are interested in finding these studies feel free to read her boooks...and you'll gain some great useful knowledge along the way! Caitlin Lorraine

The History of far-infrared technology
For years, the average consumer's familiarity with far-infrared came from the use of infrared heat lamps which produce radiant heat. Then, in the mid 1960's NASA discovered that a number of mineral oxides were also capable of generating FIR (Far-Infrared-Sauna) waves. After using various FIR (Far-Infrared-Sauna) products in the space program, no further developments occurred at NASA using this technology. However, according to Sang Wang, author of Reverse Aging, the Japanese saw other uses.

Today, over 150 patents have been granted to the Japanese for products such as: FIR saunas, FIR ovens that replace microwaves, FIR panels for incubators in maternity wards as well as FIR wave-generating ceramics and fabrics. According to Dr. Tsu-Tsair Oliver Chi, in his summation on the mechanism of action of infrared devices tuned to the human body, "...these rays are selectively absorbed by tissues needing a boost in their output. The internal production of infrared energy is associated with a variety of healing responses and may require a boost to a maximal level to insure the fullest healing response possible in a tissue which is being repaired. After boosting a tissue's level to its maximum, the remaining rays pass onward harmlessly. This phenomenon is called 'resonant-absorption.'"

Over the past 25 years, Japanese and Chinese researchers and clinicians have conducted extensive research on infrared treatments and report numerous benefits. In Japan, there is an Infrared Society, composed of medical doctors and physical therapists, to further research and support the health benefits of infrared as a method of healing.
