Digestion does have an acidic portion to it but that is only in the stomach. Food is metered out into the duodenum and is held there until sufficient pancreatic solutions rich in bicarbonate are added to the acidic stomach contents. Not until this acidic material is neutralized is it allowed to pass into the small intestine. The reason for this is that the digestive enzymes which continue to digest the food in the small intestine must be in a alkaline environment..about pH 8-9. Acid reflux from the stomach into the lower portions if the esophagus is what causes the damage. the duodenum is a sphincter through which the contents of the small intestines cannot pass. Libraries are a good place for information.

I know people who have been on those drugs for quite some time. I have not noticed any weight loss or other signs of inability to digest food as you suggest.
