It was inevitable - the GB had to go. I was in such distress and my GB was full of stones. You should have seen the shadow reflected on the scan (for those that have had a GB scan know what I'm talking about). My GB was inflammed -- meaning I was in constant pain in the right upper quadrant (by my ribs). My MD said I was thisclose to setting myself up for infection, pancreatitis, or another GB attack. After a lot of thought and prayer, I decided to remove it sooner than later.
I went in Wednesday AM with a heavy heart. I had a tubal pregnancy in 2001 that ruptured on the operating table and my heart stopped -- and I lost so much blood that I was literally dead. So going back into that room sent me into an immediate panic attack and flashbacks that you wouldn't believe. The nurse and surgeon were incredible though and got me through it and because they knew of my history were able to make sure I was as comfortable as I could be.
Anyway, surgery was at 11:15, and an hour later I woke in recovery. My throat was scratchy and I felt like I couldn't catch my breath. Ice chips took care of that. I wasn't in alot of pain, but that was because of the morphine they gave me in recovery. I was wheeled into a private room by 1:00.
Like Farscape, I couldn't void either. After a few hours I managed about 25 cc's -- very orange and dark (meaning dehydrated). by 11:00 PM I was still having problems. I was taking in liquids by mouth (over 100 oz) and they decided to do a bladder scan to see if I was backed up. Nope - there was only about 50 cc's in my bladder. My doctor said to stop pumping me full of fluids and to take the IV out. Viola -- an hour later I voided over 100 cc's.
I took pain meds because it felt like I had gone a few rounds with Tyson while I was out (focusing on the trunk) and suprisingly, quite a bit of shoulder pain (from the gas pumped in during surgery). I had a restless night and didn't sleep even though I had two Ambien tablets. I hate hospitals though, and I think it was strictly anxiety on my part.
Thankfully, I had lap surgery with 4 small incisions. The belly button incision is larger than he had hoped for only because my GB was so inflamed.
I'm home now and still haven't had a movement. Lots of gas and burping, but no movement. I'm taking Vicodin for trunk pain (every 4 hours or as needed). Last night was my first night of pretty good sleep. I have to watch what I eat, because I've already dumped. The only way I can explain it is how folks with gastric-bypass surgery eat more than they are supposed to they get the shakes and sweats. That happened to me last night after eating some chicken and rice. It looks like I'm going to have to be very careful of what I eat.
It's day 3 of my recovery and today is starting out okay. If I had to do it over again, yes, I would have made the same decision. While this pain is different, I know I couldn't walk around with an inflammed GB full of stones, worrying every moment that a GB attack was imminent.
Thanks for listening.
Melanie
