The acid/alkaline balance is only one of many factors that affect health and well being. If things were really as simple as staying alkaline then there would not be nearly as much disease, weight problems, emotional problems and poor health in general. Eating a mineral rich diet and avoiding processed foods is all most people need to do to regain health including balancing their acid/alkaline levels.

I am not saying that having the right alkaline/acid balance is not important, it is very imporant. However,it is only one small piece of a very complex puzzle. My Naturopath explained to me that simply having saliva and urine test alkaline does not prove the body is balanced the way it needs to be for optimum health, it simply reflects what kind of foods were recently consumed and eliminated. Paying close attention to what you eat and trying to balance your diet to 75-80% alkaline ash producing foods, generally fruits and vegatables, and limiting acid producing foods to 20% of the diet are enough for the majority of people.

People who do the high protein and very low carbohydrate diet do tend to be very acidic because their bodies go into ketosis once their supply of available glucose is exhausted. The body converts adipose tissue into ketones. This condition can be very stressful to the kidneys and heart. However, being too alkaline can also cause very similar problems. Proper balance is the key.
