From my experience as a chemist, John is correct.

First, Ca++ is its natural state due to natural valence and adding energt ro break off an extra electron is useless as the electron would re-associate itself as soon as the energy had dissipated (immediately in our perspective). This is just a waste of energy except for theoretical purposes.
