Several elements do pass thru the cell membrane to affect the intracellular environment. The human cell uses several 'pumps', such as the 'sodium-potassium pump' to regulate the intracellular environment. The pumps depend on ions of these elements. Considering the size of a normal human cell, size would have to matter.
Now I have benefitted from using calcium, even in the carbonate form after consuming acidic foods that would usually cause an inflammatory reaction in me. So I do not doubt that the calcium in whatever form will have an effect on the body, perhaps even thru some 'Energy' generation, or by the neutralizing effects of direct contact with opposing acidic molecules in the gastrointestinal tract. But one thing is definite in my mind, minerals in their elemental form are used directly by the cells. I believe these elements create chemical reactions within the body and the cells that produce an energy source for life. But I also believe that the form in which these elements enter the body can affect how useful they are to the body, and how efficiently they can produce energy.
Things we consume, as we all know, can have an effect on the intestinal tract, the body tissue, or both. Example: psyllium husks and Bentonite clay will pass thru the GI tract, but their components will not come in direct contact with say, the eyes. This doesn't mean that the husks and clay do not contain any nutrients within their individual structures. It means that either the bonds within the item are chemically insoluble in the body, or the bonds within the item are chemically too strong for the body's digestive system to break, as in the clay. Carrot juice, on the other hand, will breakdown in the GI tract and have an effect on the body tissue, as seen in some people who over do it and develop orangish skin color. I use these examples because different forms of minerals can react the same way in the digestive tract. Some bonds will break easily, others will not.
