>First I have been taking herbal laxatives for about a year. If I don't take them I don't go. Ingredients are Pysillium seed, bentonite, cascara sagrada, capiscum, garlic, rosehips, aloe rhubarb root, black walnut, senna, flax meal, slippery elm, licorice, marshmallow and peppermint. Naturopath says its non addicting.
He said to take it everyday for life.
I think Shelley would agree with me when I say *&!"@£@@"@!!!
Consider getting a new naturopath. I'm afraid he is wrong as laxatives are dependency-forming (more proper term than addictive). As for his advice to take it every day for life - how much money is he making? Does he sell direct or get commission?
I wouldn't advise anyone to take a supplement *for life*.
You need to be building up your fibre intake slowly, both through non-laxative supplements (psyllium and flax based), and your diet. Also plenty of oils & plenty of water (don't skimp on these - very important).
>Ok,to the main question. I have started to take a product which helps to balance my immune system. They say to stop all supplements for the first month on this product especially herbs, so my immune system can start to balance. What would be a good laxative or fiber supplement for me to take without herbs that actually work? I have at least 2 bms a day on my herbals. I know I have to increase my water intake also. Since I haven't taken my herbs this week I have to do enemas every day to have a bm.
I would need to know the nature of the product and what it contains, but my guess is you will be fine taking fibre. Reason being is that fibre supplements (by defintion) are not absorbed. I would have thought that taking fibre/psyllium would help you balance your immune system by supporting your body's detoxing capabilities.
The fact that you are dependent on a laxative-containing supplement means that you will probably experience some constipation as you wean yourself off. Short term that is probably unavoidable.
Medium term you need to get onto taking a psyllium shake (with olive oil) once a day, then bulid up from there. Concurrently you need to up the fibre in the food you eat, and take plenty of good oils and plenty of water.
