Hiya Raymond!
The answer is in your diet. The psyllium seed fiber is an excellent fiber. it draws water to it and so increases bulk like a sponge.
If your normal non-supplemented stools are thin and short then you aren't eating enough grains, fruits and veggies. Berries are fantastic, and if you can eat flour, go for pancakes! ;) or Bob's Red Mill 5-grain cereal which has flax in it. Even if you are limiting fruit you cna eat one apple a day! I just made pancakes with Bob's whole grain flour - yummy!
Also great are those trail mixes with nuts, raisens and dates. Lots of good fiber there! Or Govinda Bliss Bars.
It's good to take a 2-4 week long break just to make sure you don't get allergic to the psyllium. You can take other fibers tho, such as flax seed powder. Otherwise, you really don't need to take just a few days break unless you're curious to see how much stronger your bowels are getting.
