My best friend died of alcoholism last week. She struggled so hard to beat it and AA did help her at times but her failing health caused her so much pain and so many times she would be drawn in and out of hospitals and treatment centers. She finally gave up the ghost and she died. I miss her so much.....but years ago I had to get away from her to save my sanity and save my life. I had never known an alcoholic before I met her and she was beautiful. It was hard not to fall in love someone who could love the wretched person I was, following my divorce. I was going down and she picked me up...so I owed it to her to pick her up...when she was down...but I failed... A thousand of my prayers could not overcome her powerful addiction... It takes two in agreement to make some prayers work and her will was so powerfully attached to alcohol. If I had known what I know now though, I would have encouraged her to change her diet because her diet was very poor. She would quit drinking and start consuming sodas like crazy. I would have recommended cottage cheese and flax-seed oil to help her overcome her addiction to sugar. I would have recommended fish oil and fresh vegetables... A salad a day... to help her with her liver and pancreas. Some flushes may have helped her as well.
I think that I was most sad when she would call me and say she wanted to get back with me...but she would only make those calls when she was wet(drinking). When she called and she was dry, she was usually calling to make ammends. I can only say that I love her and the world is a better place for having had her...She was kind to every stranger...but she tormented those she loved... So many wonderful memories I have between the so many nightmares I try to forget... The nightmares are vanishing these days and most of all the memories that remain are those moments of joy we shared.
AA talks about find your higher power. AA believes finding your higher power is one of the most important keys to overcoming Alcoholism and that makes sense to me. Alcoholism is a spiritual disease first: Lying, cheating, stealing etc...
If you are an alcoholic don't be so hard on yourself. The allergic response of your body to alcohol is not your fault but you can get help by finding your higher power to help you fight that allergy spiritually. If you are an alcoholic...AA may help you... but I would also want to encourage you to change your diet and take nutritional supplents to get you back on the right track. When we can begin to look at alcoholism as an allergy then it can change our perspective about the physical symptoms....
There are ways to fight allergies ............but every physical disease has a spiritual counterpart. You must find a way to overcome the spiritual sickness of alcoholism but if you don't treat your body the way it needs to be treated to help in your battle then you may just become another statistic. Find God, but when you do, and figure out how much God loves you, then start taking care of your body...It might make all the difference in the world to the other 33 out of 34 people who attend AA and never recover from alcoholism. Find God & I hope you find your way to perfect health as well... & I hope for you
Love, Light, & Joyful Laughter
