That was a very, very brave thing you did and don't feel horrible about lying. Most peopel lie, and about much less grave things than that.
This is a very hard thing to deal with because of the stigma attached to it and then hearing such negative things about your condition from someone you care about so much only makes it that more painful to address.

Forgive yourself for having lied, after all, you are only human.
Now, if you hadn't done the right thing and told him, then you would have a lot on your conscience. but your knee jerk reaction of denial isn't to be condemned. It's to be understood and taken in it's context. Life is a whole lotta shades of grey, and not much black and white. Choose to give meaning to things that are supportive and constructive and take action to change those things that you know are wrong within you or need improvement. Don't bash yourself for being made of flesh and blood. :-)
