One year ago, I had very strong influence, and during that my hearing was very bad, I was nearly deaf. However, after that, my hearing returned, I thought to normal level. However, after I had hearing loss test (first time in my life) they told me that I have "high frequency loss", possibly induced buy noise or loud music, and is older and has nothing to do with that influence. They told me that I don't need hearing aids, but I have to do hearing test regularly, once in six months. It is true that for long time I notice that sometimes, I have a problem of misunderstanding some words, especially under conditions of noisy environment or bad acoustics (large classroom, restaurants, etc.). So I had hearing test again in the same hospital, and last time just a week ago in local hearing aid dispensing center. All tests were nearly same, with line starting at 20-25 at 125 Hz, than going to 10-15 at 250 Hz, and then continuing nearly flat up to 1500 Hz. At 2000 Hz it goes little down, to 25-30, but then going abruptly down to 35-40 at 3000 Hz, and than continuing slowly down to 50 (left ear) and 60 (right ear) at 4000 Hz and then continue nearly constant up to 8000 Hz.
As I said, results were the same, but diagnosis completely different. They told me that I have slight loss at low and mid tones, but "moderate-to-severe" at high tones, so I can have "substantial benefit" if I get hearing aids (two of them, for both ears!). They also told me that analog hearing aid cannot help me, so they have to be digital ones, exactly programed to my hearing loss.
I didn't decide in the moment, because I want to hear more opinions.
So here is my question. I am not one of those stupid who don't want to use aids they need. I wear glasses from primary school, and I don't think they look bad, nor that I look "handicapped", so even less problem would be with hearing aids. But I don't want to wear them if I don't really need them, as it is quite good expense only to make experiment and than to drop them, because there is no benefit.
So I would like to know do I need hearing aids or not for such a sort of hearing loss? Can I benefit with better speech understanding if I use them? Or maybe, I can only make bad thing even worse? Some friend of mine told me that using hearing aid by somebody who doesn't need them, can make ears "lazy" increasing hearing loss that way.
Please, can you tell me what is your recommendation?
Oh yes, I am 21 if it is important.
Thanks,
Christine
